About the artwork;

Master calligrapher, internationally known performance calligrapher with a human-sized brush. I was fortunate to visit him with our group and informed guide then return the following week for a private lesson in Sumi-e brush painting.

During the 1950’s and 60’s, many western artists studied Asian calligraphy. People such as Mark Tobey, Sam Francis, Jackson Pollack and Franz Kine were not only influenced by Asian calligraphy, but in turn helped to stimulate Asian artists such as Ibata-san.

Shotei Ibata has exhibited and performed his works throughout the world for the past 40 years and has received many awards. He has worked hard to liberate the art of calligraphy from its traditional restraints, and was the first to use a large brush for public performance.
