Photography & Artwork By
Deborah Sussex
I’m a multidisciplinary artist based in Durango, Colorado, working across photography, pastel, watercolor, ink, marker—and whatever else invites creative play. I’m drawn to the expressive potential of mark-making, texture, color, and the mystery of not knowing exactly where a piece will lead. For me, the creative process is a conversation between inner and outer landscapes—part intuition, part exploration, part letting go.
Whether I’m in the studio, walking the trails with my Border Collie, or holding space for someone’s creative unfolding, I return again and again to the same values: presence, curiosity, and compassion. Wild places inspire me. So do quiet moments, good questions, and the courage it takes to begin again.
About Deborah
One of my earliest memories of art is sitting on my mother’s lap while she read to me about Rembrandt van Rijn from the World Book Encyclopedia. I must have been just four years old. For reasons I couldn’t possibly explain at the time, I was captivated by the Dutch master. Looking back, I think the seeds of a creative life were planted right then and there.
I’ve never followed a straight path—no formal art school, no tidy career track. My education has been wildly eclectic, shaped by deep curiosity and a tangle of passions: art-making, anthropology, medicine, wilderness travels, and mindfulness. I’ve always been willing to try new things, take risks, and follow sparks of inspiration. I’ve started businesses from scraps of ideas, balanced the demands of independence and family, and found freedom in carving out a life that feels true. Through it all, creativity has been the throughline—sometimes bold, sometimes quiet, always guiding me forward.
That early spark stayed with me. I bought my first camera with a high school art scholarship and found myself at a crossroads: art school, or a life of travel and adventure? I chose the latter—without regret—and brought my camera along for the ride. For over fifteen years, I lived a rich, nomadic life as an outdoor educator and wilderness expedition leader, exploring remote corners of the U.S. and beyond. Along the way, I earned a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota—a natural extension of my deep interest in people, culture, and how we make meaning in the world.
In 2016, I founded Creative Nature™ Coaching, a practice rooted in the belief that our creative nature is unique, vital, and worthy of tending. Soon after, I became a certified teacher in mindfulness and meditation, blending those practices into both my coaching and creative life. These tools help me—and those I support—navigate the challenges and gifts of the creative path with more clarity and compassion.
about
My Roots
As a fourth generation North Dakotan,
I carry deep roots in the prairies and plains. I’ve always felt a special connection with wide open landscapes—whether it’s the vast sweep of prairie grasslands or the stark beauty of the high Arctic. After my family moved to Minnesota in my teens, I fell in love with the Northwoods lake country and was introduced to backcountry adventures—experiences that deepened my relationship with the natural world and nurtured my creative spirit.
I lived in Ely, Minnesota
for 23 years, on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where I ran a photography studio and gallery. Winters were especially inspiring—filled with quiet beauty, long outings, and cross-country skiing. The rhythms of the seasons, the solitude of the landscape, and the connections I built through my work as a photographer in a small community continue to shape my creative path.
In 2012, my husband, our beloved Border Collie, and I relocated to Durango, Colorado, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living near the mountains. I especially love exploring the mountains by bike—both road and trail—feeling the seasons shift under my wheels, from early spring melt to golden autumn rides. Cycling keeps me grounded and present, offering yet another way to witness the land, breathe deeply, and gather inspiration. Many of my ideas are born on long rides—where movement quiets the mind and opens space for insight, imagination, and intuition to arise.
Durango, CO is now my home base
Nestled in the heart of the Four Corners region. I’m continually inspired by the landscapes of the greater Southwest—the high desert plateaus, red rock canyons, slickrock trails, remote wilderness, and sacred mountain scapes. This land holds a deep, quiet power. It’s a place of beauty and complexity, shaped by rich indigenous cultures and spiritual histories that continue to influence and inform my personal and creative life.roots
My Work
I began as a photographer—captivated by light and composition with both portrait and landscape—and later fell in love with pastel painting. Over time, my practice has expanded to include sketching, drawing with markers, watercolor, and charcoal mark making. I’m ever curious, always tempted by new tools, media, and any process that sparks my creative heart.

At its heart, self-compassion means treating ourselves as we would a dear friend. This simple, radical shift has changed how I relate to myself and support others. These practices are universal and can be applied by anyone, in any circumstance.
