About the artwork;

“Coming Up For Air” is a self-portrait series made in a timewhere I knew I needed to move through what I had and wasn’t sure exactly where I was going, but knew what I wanted and that was change. When describing the feeling of monumental change in ones life, people often use the phrase, “I jumped off a cliff”. While an apt description, I feel it as diving into a vessel of water, holding my breath knowing that I will need to make my way to the surface and eventually gasp for oxygen.

I moved to Durango just over one year ago from northern Minnesota. I came from the land of clear, abundant water in all its wet and frozen states to the mountainous, arid southwest which got its hold on me some 30 years ago. I left behind more than I could ever understand with much of that centered around an identity; to a job, a landscape & climate, a community, a family and a homeplace. Like my North Dakota homesteading ancestors, I make my way through the deep waters of loss and longing to breath the refreshing air of new opportunities and possibilities which are no longer dreams but realities. Step by step, each day in my new home is a journey of great potential and excitement.
