About deborah

Hello from Durango, Colorado

I have always been an artist and am proud and fond of this innate desire to create, explore, study, delve into and express myself…artistically.  My work is my own and I am inspired by many people, places and things.  To name a few of each: O’Keeffe, Rembrandt, Bourke-White, the great plains & prairies, the arctic, waterways, innocence, relationships and emotions.  Read more below…

As a fourth generation North Dakotan, I have deep family roots and connections to the prairies and plains, which, along with all wide open spaces, have been a source of inspiration to me. As a young teen, my family moved to Minnesota where I fostered a love for the northwoods lake country and, through friends, was introduced to camping and backcountry adventures. Read more below…

For 23 years I lived in Ely, MN, on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where I owned and operated a photography studio and gallery. In late 2012, my husband and I fulfilled a life long dream to live in the mountains and relocated from the Land of 10,000 Lakes to the stunning and arid Four Corners region. As an active outdoor enthusiast, wilderness traveler, educator, athlete, and arts advocate, I am delighted to call Durango, CO my new home.

My Photography

I purchased my first camera with a high school art scholarship. At that time, I felt torn between art school and a life of traveling and working adventures. With no regrets, I chose the latter and brought my camera with me. I spent over 15 years in a content, nomadic lifestyle, primarily working as an outdoor educator and wilderness expedition leader, both domestically and abroad.

I earned a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Hamline University in St.Paul, Minnesota.

I continue to experiment in film, digital imaging, small and medium formats. I value the entire process from pre-visualization to capture, to print, to presentation and I thoughtfully apply my personal touch in each aspect.

My Pastels

My life as an artist is, yet again, in an exciting chapter.  In recent years, I have revisited my affection for painting & drawing and am earnestly pursuing pastel painting for which I have been awarded several grants and scholarships to further my practice and studies.

My work in pastels & photography complement one another and each is strengthened through my viewing the world around as always a composition of light, shadow, color harmony and purpose.

I work towards capturing mood-evoking, essence-grasping moments using striking light, attention to detail and expressive gestures. I strive for a new frame of reference with otherwise predictable subject matter.

My Portrait Art

My photographic style is also my personal style. It all starts with my three word mantra: honesty, integrity, listening. When I am invited to photograph you, your extended family, or your children, I consider it an honor.

I have learned that my calm and patient demeanor opens the door to listening and learning about you. I will discover the nuances and expressions that make each person special and capture that essence in treasured works of fine art portraiture.

I owned and operated a portrait studio and gallery for nearly 20 years.  Now relocated to Durango, I am excited to offer my services and feel that working “on location” is perfectly matched for the climate and lifestyle.
